La simetría hexagonal y la estructura ramificada de un simple copo de nieve es uno de los regalos visuales de la naturaleza. Aquí se revela a través de una fotomicrografía transiluminada con un filtro multicolor colocado bajo el campo de la lente del microscopio. El hielo transparente del copo actúa como una lente compleja, refractando los colores procedentes de distintos lugares del filtro a la cámara.        
El copo de nieve se fotografió en Kiruna (Suecia).

The hexagonal symmetry and branching structure of a simple snowflake is one of the visual treats of nature. Herein it is revealed through a photomicrograph transilluminated with a Multicoloured filter placed beneath the field lens of the microscope. The clear ice of the flake acts like a complex lens, refracting colours from different parts of the filter into the camera. The snowflake was shot on location in Kiruna, Sweden.

Región retrolaminar de un nervio óptico humano.

Imagen obtenida con microscopía de barrido (SEM) en una preparación de nervio previamente digerida con tripsina para la eliminación de todo el tejido nervioso. Con esta técnica se pone de manifiesto todo el entramado de tejido conectivo que forma la tabicación de la región retrolaminar y que se extiende en continuidad desde la envuelta de un vaso central hasta el tabique pial periférico.

Image obtained using scanning electron microscopy.  The optic nerve was prepared by digestion with trypsin to remove the nervous tissue and to reveal the connective tissue. This technique reveals the structure of the connective tissue that makes up the wall of the retrolaminar region, extending from the adventitia of the central vessel to the peripheral pia mater.

Ali Baba, Lawrence and Hollywood attracted masses of people to this parched land of the south west of Morocco. Years later and forgotten, only the ruins of the Kasbah surround the local inhabitants. Thirst and a desire to find work are all that is left to the people and the son of the local Justice of the Peace.

A fern in bud revealing how Nature creates her own geometrical growth patterns.

Brote de helecho que muestra cómo la naturaleza toma estructuras geométricas en fases de crecimiento.

Impressed and moved by the "Boca del Infierno" (the Jaws of Hell) of the Iguazú cataracts, I saw this spectacularly colourful butterfly resting for a moment on my Argentinian woollen bag. The photograph, not taken with a professional camera, (Hp 3.2), was the result of an instant in which this marvellous insect decided to pose for me.
The result was a photograph full of colour and contrast.

Tras quedar impresionada a la salida de la "Boca del Infierno" de las cataratas del Iguazú, esta vistosa y llamativa mariposa se detuvo un instante en mi bolso de lana de argentino. La foto, lejos de ser tomada con una cámara profesional, (Hp 3.2 MP) fue el resultado de un preciso momento en el que este maravilloso insecto se posó junto a mi. El resultado fue una foto llena de color y contraste.

Double vision in a multicoloured world

This photograph was taken last year while on a visit to Chile, the country in which I was born. The photograph shows the reflection of the coloured houses in the fishing villageof Palafitos, in the region of Chiloé to the south of Chile.

I consider it to be a scientific photograph because the theme of reflection, as may be appreciated in the sea, formed part of my studies. The symmetry is well defined and the optical effect is well achieved by the clarity with which the sea is portrayed. The colours have been enhanced to give the photograph an extra beauty.

A stereo image obtained using a Technival Carl Zeiss Jena stereomicroscope, which shows part of the ocular vasculature in two diaphanized eyeballs.

The diaphanization technique is based on the principle that a tissue refracts the least amount of light and reaches its maximum transparency when it is surrounded and embedded in a substance whose refractive index equals the average refractive index of the tissue. If the blood vessels have previously been infused with a coloured resin, the ocular vasculature can be studied.

As evening draws in, the beach empties but two children engrossed in their games are reluctant to abandon it and go home.

A última hora de la tarde la playa se queda vacía, pero dos niños juegan y se resisten a abandonarla y volver a casa.

My attention was drawn to a computer monitor screen abandoned in the countryside (hence the title). Things once highly valued are suddenly seen as old and obsolete and are simply discarded and dumped.

Me llamó la atención el contraste que provoca una pantalla de ordenador tirada en un ambiente rural (de ahí el título), así como ver que algunas cosas envejecen o se quedan atrás, cuando probablemente antes se le dieron valor.
