Management o WCM).
El hombre primitivo, como nosotros, necesitaba procurarse
alimentos.

To discuss why a content management system (CMS) for collection
development is necessary in a distance education environment, restructuring
technical services in preparation for a CMS implementation, and the actual
building of a prototype. Design/methodology/approach The article outlines
the planning and processes necessary in designing and building a CMS from
scratch using existing resources and putting them to effective use.
Findings While development and completion of the CMS database was
accomplished in a timely fashion, implementation in the library has been slow
because of negotiating security issues. Practical implications A resource
for any academic library considering developing their own CMS in house.
Originality/value Content management systems are becoming common at large
universities with resources to obtain the software "out of the box" and with
full time computer support staffs implement them. However, content management
systems are much less common in the small university environment. Creating one
for managing library collection development is unique.

converting to a dynamic, application driven web site results in a more flexible,
efficient, and consistent web presence. Research limitations/implications
Every library is unique and what worked well at Rensselaer might not work as
well elsewhere. Luwak is currently only available to organizations at
Rensselaer. Practical implications A useful primer on how a conversion
like this happens and on the sort of features that can make a database driven
web application run smoothly. Originality/value This paper provides a
unique account of one libraries' experience in making the sort of transition
that will become increasingly important for all library web sites.

Resumen:
If you have previously heard about content management (CM) it
is most likely because you are connected to a large Web development project.
Today that is where most of the interest and activity are. When the Web moved
past small informally designed sites and into large, rapidly changing sites, the
need for strong management tools became pressing. Product companies moved in to
address this need and called their offerings content management systems (CMS).
If your only problem is to create and maintain a large website, you have reason
enough to desire the strict structure and formal procedures of a CMS. Such a
system helps you get and stay organized so that your site can grow and change
quickly while maintaining high quality. The Web, however, is simply one of many
outlets for information that organizations need to manage. And when the amount
of information sharing between these outlets grows, the desire for an organized
approach becomes an absolute need.

Resumen:
In recent years libraries and other cultural institutions have
become increasingly concerned about the tendency for Web sites to lose content
over time, especially those that are managed informally and without strong
institutional backing. Cornell's Project Prism has been exploring ways to detect
risks to Web resources as the first step toward developing a toolset for
managing risks without necessarily requiring libraries to capture and archive
the Web resources themselves. Thus, over the past year we have been monitoring
Web sites and documenting changes in their status that may indicate short- and
long-term risks to content.

Resumen:
The University of Minnesota Libraries have developed and
implemented LibCMS, an open architecture content management system (CMS) that
combines with the previously-built LibData system to meet the web page
publishing and site management needs of a large research library. The purpose of
this paper is to present overall observations about CMSs and their
implementation, and details the requirements and design of LibCMS.
Design/methodology/approach The system's development followed an
evolutionary path moving from a modest data repository, to a large system with a
three-tiered web page authoring environment, and now to a CMS with site-level
management capability. This work leaned on abstract tree structures to manage
navigational hierarchy both within and between pages. Methods were developed to
represent tree architecture in an RDBMS while economizing traversal and
maintenance of nodes. Findings Developing the CMS locally ensured that
design followed the requirements of a large academic library environment and its
service/business model. This also allowed the implementation to be an organic
extension of existing authoring tools in the environment rather than the
potentially disruptive incorporation of a new system. Research
limitations/implications Architectural problems encountered here have
traditionally been treated outside of library and information science. The
challenge both in implementation and in research has been to bridge gaps between
computer science and applied technologies in libraries. Practical
implications Implementations of open source, library-oriented CMSs could,
over time, open the door to community software development and distribution
efforts. Originality/value This paper uniquely details the rationale and
design of a library-oriented, open architecture CMS, built to interoperate with
a large, content repository.
As libraries build ever-larger collections of electronic
resources, finding ways to manage them efficiently becomes a major challenge.
The number of electronic journals, citation databases, and full-text
aggregations held by most libraries has grown rapidly. Managing these electronic
resources involves providing the library's user with convenient ways to find and
access them and providing library staff with the tools to keep track of
them

Content management (CM) has been on the short list of
initiatives for many organizations the past few years. The proliferation of
Web-based content on corporate intranets, extranets and Web pages has provided a
daunting array of challenges. Organizations must insure that posted information
is relevant, authentic and appropriate. And, if you listen to all the analyst
firms the industry numbers would bear this out. According to Gartner, the CM
software market should grow to about $6 billion by the year 2003. A little more
conservatively but still on the growth curve, IDC estimates that the CM market
will be $4.3 billion by the year 2004, a growth of 31% per year. Meta estimates
the market to be $10 billion by 2004 and Ovum estimates the sales of software
and services to be $13.3 billion by 2004.

This article describes a multicase field study of four
public-facing Midwestern state agencies and how they organized the work of
reviewing and approving textual content for publication on Internet Web sites.
Drawing on field data and concepts from institutional theory, contingency
theory, and organizational design, the paper generates a framework to document
systematically the processes and practices involved in the review and approval
of textual Web content. The framework is then used to compare textual content
management practices across the four case sites and to begin to investigate the
effects of variation in content management practices on characteristics of the
available textual content. The article suggests how the framework could be used
in future research to investigate how content practices affect content
characteristics such as quality, quantity, and cost and to investigate how and
why content management practices change over time.

Resumen:
To report on the content management system designed to manage
the 30 web-based research guides developed by the subject liaison librarians at
the Georgia State University Library. Design/methodology/approach The web
development librarian, with assistance from the web programmer, designed a
system using MySQL and ASP. A liaison team gave input on the system through
rigorous testing and assisted with the design of the templates that control the
layout of the content on the guides. A usability study and two surveys were also
completed. Findings The new system met and exceeded the baseline
expectations for content collection and management, offering a greater control
over appearance and navigation while still offering customization features for
liaisons. Improvements are planned for the templates in addition to better
promotion of the guides on the library web site. Initial and ongoing training
for the liaisons should have been more effectively addressed. Despite their
observed and future potential advantages, the CMS model has not been universally
adopted by academic libraries. Practical implications Regardless of the
technology involved, libraries preparing for a CMS transition must give at least
as much attention to user issues as they do to technical issues, from the
organizational buy-in and comprehensive training to internal/external usability.
Originality/value This paper contributes to a small but growing collection

Resumen:
Visions of user-centered approaches to digital library futures
are uncertain. One can best understand what those futures portent by briefly
exploring one's roots and traditions and concepts of service. Much of the future
will be driven by technological change, but it will be moderated by the sense of
service and purpose brought to the digital library by the people who use it and
by the people who work in and through it. The digital library of the future will
be impacted by several factors, one of which is the newly digital nature or
format for information. Another is the redefinition of the book in at least some
cases from a static to a fluid medium. The seeming inability to archive fluid
media has changed libraries. Digital libraries are now distributed constructs of
the mind rather than physical buildings with paper content. All of this, in
turn, has led to new means and mechanisms for the management, classification,
distribution, identification, retrieval, and storage of information in ways
heretofore unimaginable. In the medium to long term, new means as yet not
imagined will be developed to meet our information needs to further redefine
digital libraries.

To describe the evolution of a content management system at the
University of Maine Library that would function as a universal, extensible
metadata repository, thereby eliminating the need to build separate databases
for new digital collections, and facilitating both end-user access and the
management of electronic resources in an integrated technology environment.
Design/methodology/approach Beginning with the development of a prototype
system that mapped EAD encoded finding aids to a relational database, this paper
discusses the evolution of this prototype into the design and implementation of
a RDBMS (and continuing development of an object-oriented database management
systems (OODBMS) system) to actively manage digital objects and associated
metadata. The key to the system design is metadata: extracting and mapping,
transforming, and managing the processing of MARC-based metadata into non-MARC
schemes to build digital collections. Other relevant CMS architecture issues
discussed are the design of a functional bibliographic structure and utilities
for metadata harvesting and indexing. Findings Provides information on the
use of the Dublin Core Abstract Model and a flexible and adaptable
collection-centric approach in the overall CMS architecture as implemented on a
non-MARC RDBMS, and provides an explanation of the advantages of an object
oriented database system over the complexity of evolving relational database
tables. Practical implications A useful source for the development of an
in-house CMS, and a contribution to the growing body of literature about the
transformation of MARC-based metadata for database design.

Purpose - To help determine the extent to which
'unique' informational content is available on personal home pages (PHP) on the
world wide web (WWW). Design/methodology/approach - The informational content of
PHPs is manually compared with the informational content of non-PHPs in the
field of professional football in England. This produces instances of
information which is available on the PHPs but not on the non-PHPs. A search is
then carried out to determine whether these pieces of information are available
elsewhere on the web. Findings - There are notable quantities of information
which are only available on PHPs. There are also instances where certain
information will be available on PHPs before it is available on non-PHPs. In
addition, the degree to which information on PHPs is correct is also likely to
be quite high. These facts in conjunction suggest that PHPs as a whole make a
notable contribution to the informational content of the WWW. Research
limitations/implications - The sample data are limited in size and scope.
Practical implications - PHP visibility and utilization may increase.
Originality/value - Provides a methodology for informational comparisons of web
pages.

como suporte a base Web of Science, do Institute for Scientific Information
A título
Usability. Next to electronic content management systems and
institutional repositories, this one just might be the biggest panacea sweeping
the library world. If you had asked me my opinion of usability 18 months ago, I
might have said: 'If someone doesn't build it, no one can use it. How's that for
usability?' Then,I embarked on a writing project for Library Technology Reports
on building better library Web services ('Optimizing Library Web Services: a
Usability Approach,' LTR, v. 38 no. 2, Mar./Apr. 2002). The more research I did,
the more I kept coming back to usability procedures, testing, and best
practices. Before I knew it, I was writing a 28,000-word 'article' on usability
approaches to optimizing library Web services.

The University of Oklahoma Libraries (UL) has created content
management tools located on the staff intranet. These tools allow library
personnel to control the content on the web site while the library systems
office maintains site navigation and consistent site design. These tools have
been in place for approximately three years, but this study is the first formal
evaluation of these systems. Design/methodology/approach To evaluate usage
of the content management tools in place at UL, the authors surveyed all levels
of library personnel to see how they utilize the library intranet to manage web
site content. The authors examined both self-reported usage of the staff
intranet and data collected from the systems office about actual usage.
Findings This study provides insight on the intended use of content
management systems versus the actual usage of these systems. Research
limitations/implications Future research should focus on how CMS is being
used by regular users of the systems rather than usage of the system as a whole.
Survey results were skewed by including student workers who seldom have reason
to use the intranet or CMS tools within the scope of their positions. Practical
implications Explores the issues surrounding the use of the intranet as a
tool for communication and managing content on a public web site. Tools must be
properly marketed if they are to be fully utilized. Originality/value This
paper will benefit those in organizations that are considering locally
developing content management tools or that are beginning to evaluate usage of
their staff intranet.

Resumen:
Introducing context to a user query is effective to improve the
search effectiveness. In this article we propose a method employing the
taxonomy-based search services such as Web directories to facilitate searches in
any Web search interfaces that support Boolean queries. The proposed method
enables one to convey current search context on taxonomy of a taxonomy-based
search service to the searches conducted with the Web search interfaces. The
basic idea is to learn the search context in the form of a Boolean condition
that is commonly accepted by many Web search interfaces, and to use the
condition to modify the user query before forwarding it to the Web search
interfaces. To guarantee that the modified query can always be processed by the
Web search interfaces and to make the method adaptive to different user
requirements on search result effectiveness, we have developed new fast
classification learning algorithms.

No

Information and documentation services available on the
Internet through web servers are growing in an exponential manner. The logical
evolution of the Internet over the last 10 years has been producing a
replacement of static web pages and documents by dynamically generated
documents. This is due both to user interaction with work processes and flows
defined by service creators and to the availability of growing information
repositories. This has meant a progressive evolution from a concept of web page
publishing which was quite simple in its origins to more complex and
differentiated schemes relying on procedures and techniques based on information
management. The increasing complexity of services and systems supporting them
has made it necessary to formulate a theoretical and practical corpus capable of
combining classical information management techniques within organizations with
the particular features of the digital environment.
digital.

Resumen:
The process of content management begins when an organization
comes to the realization that it needs a system to manage content. While the
interpretation of the term content management (CM) can be as simple as a set of
guidelines for organizing and maintaining content, more typically today it means
a sophisticated software-based system. A full-featured content management system
(CMS) takes content from inception to publication and does so in a way that
provides for maximum content accessibility and reuse and easy, timely, accurate
maintenance of the content base.

Resumen:
To research a resource description framework (RDF) based
digital library system that facilitates digital resource management and supports
knowledge management for an interoperable information environment.
Design/methodology/approach The paper first introduces some of issues with
metadata management and knowledge management and describes the needs for a true
interoperable environment for information transferring across domains. A journal
delivery application has been implemented as a concept-proof project to
demonstrate the usefulness of RDF in digital library systems. Findings The
RDF-based digital library system at the University of Arizona Libraries provides
an easy way for digital resource management by integrating other applications
regardless of metadata formats and web presence. Practical implications A
journal delivery application has been running in the RDF-based digital library
system since April 2005. An electronic theses and dissertation application will
be handled by the same system. Originality/value The paper suggests to use
RDF, the semantic web technology, as a new approach to facilitate knowledge
management and metadata management. Using RDF technology brings new ways to
manage and discover information for libraries.
