Javier Romero

Venue: University of Oslo, Norway.

From: April 15, 2010

to: April 30, 2010

Javier Romero is head of research at Fundación Oftalmológica del Mediterráneo, Spain, and Dean of the Faculty of Experimental sciences and health, Universidad Cardenal Herrera-CEU.

His project, together with Bjóm Nicolaissen, consists of to invesligate whether the presently used ex vivo conditions facilitate cellular stress and damage

About his work:

"Transptantation of the cornea is the most common of all transplant procedures, and methods for engineering of corneal lissue are being developed, procedures for transplantation of epithelial lissue are currently well established internationally in centers for advanced anterior segment research and surgery, including in host institulion, the Centre for Eye Research.
Preliminary results from studies in collaboration between the Host institution and FOM showed that oxidqaive by products in the medium were accumulated during ex vivo maintenance.
Considering these preliminary results there will be crucial to invesligate whether this accumulation of oxidative stress products affects cells maintained in these environmental conditions."
