Universidad Complutense de Madrid :: NILS mobility project

Abel Extraordinary Chair - Profiles

Tomás García

Venue: University of Bergen, Department of Biomedicine, Norway

From: June 22nd till December 22nd, 2010

Tomás García is assistant professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, ETSI of Informatics, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Spain. He is a PhD student and works in the interpretation of medial images.

Between the 2001 and 2008 work in the UNED in the development of e-Learning tools. From 2001 is tutor of the UNED and between the years 2006 and 2008 worked like assistant professor in the university Antonio de Nebrija.

He realized the post-grade in UNED where worked in mathematical Morphology and now he works in segmentation of medial images with techniques of Artificial Intelligence.

The aim of his work is to work with Professor Arvid Lundervold MD, to improve the segmentation of magnetic resonance images with the use of active surfaces. In our case, we try to use two active surfaces that work in a
collaborative form, since one is contained within the other: one of them will seek gray- white matter separation, while the other will be responsible for locating the separation between gray matter and CSF. The benefit of working with two active surfaces simultaneously is the possibility of extending the definition of forces that control the active surface, with the use of a new force, which we call connection force, and which is defined to ensure that both surfaces evolve jointly. To define this force it will be necessary to introduce external knowledge coming from a human expert or learned from data.

About his work:

"My current research interest is to improve the segmentation of brains tissue into magnetic resonance images (MRI) with the use of active surfaces, (Medical images; MRI; Segmentation of the human cerebral cortex; Deformable cotours; Active Contours)."
