Abel Extraordinary Chair - Profiles

Arkadi Ponossov

Venue: Universidad de Lleida, Spain.

From: June 1st, till August 31st, 2010

Arkadi Ponossov is Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Technologies in the Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE), Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

About his work:

"Mathematical modelling offers a good way to collect, grasp, fest and communicate knowledge about complex systems, and thus provides efficient tools for analyzing and predicting expected systems' behaviour. In particular, differential equation models are particularly informative with respect to understanding casual mechanisms and their control. However, classical mathematical modelling, e.g. the one based on mechanistic equations, can sometimes appear irrelevant when applied in biological sciences. The main goal of many internationally recognised research schools is therefore to investigate how studies of complex systems can be made less subjective, cost-efficient, more realistic and more attractive for scientists in different fields. The strengths of traditional numerical and mathematical modelling combined with specific features of complex biological systems should be made more easily available to biologists. Conversely, this kind of modelling should provide new sources and ideas for mathematicians.
The suggested project may be put into this general research framework. Specifically, it will deal with so-called power-law formalism which appears to be one of the corner-stones of mathematical system's biology."
