Research

 Our research focuses in both experimental and theoretical aspects of the Dynamics of Chemical Reactions and related processes in which lasers constitute a basic tool.

 The study of the dynamics of chemical reactions in the gas phase implies the determination of a series of observables of the reaction at a molecular level, such as state-to-state integral and differential cross sections and vector correlations. These observables provide very detailed information about the elemental mechanisms of chemical reactions or, in other words, the breaking and forming of the chemical bonds involved in the reaction. In addition, they provide information about the influence of collision and internal energy, the orientation of reactants and the quantum states of both reagents and products on chemical reactivity.

 The dynamical studies in our group extend to the field of molecular alignment and the control of chemical reactions and to the laser-matter interaction in multiphoton ionization and laser desorption ionization processes.
 From an experimental point of view, we have well equipped laboratories with resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS), molecular beams and velocity map imaging (VMI) techniques. In addition, from a more applied side, we have developed gas chromatography (GC) in combination with multiphoton ionization (MPI) with TOFMS, matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) techniques. In all cases, nanosecond and femtosecond laser sources, available through the Centro de Láseres Ultrarrápidos (CLUR) at UCM, are employed.

 Complementary to these experimental research lines, very active theoretical research lines have been developed in the last two decades, which are devoted to the study of the dynamics of elementary chemical reactions by means of quantum mechanical and quasiclassical trajectory methods and ab initio and density functional electronic molecular structure calculations.
